Gymnast Leigha Hancock talks with MassLive about her role in ‘The Hunger Games’:
Students at Tim Daggett’s Gold Medal Gymnastics in Agawam might be surprised to learn of their coaches is in the blockbuster film “The Hunger Games.”
Leigha Hancock, 25, a 2004 graduate of Suffield High School, parlayed her extensive acrobatic skills into a fledgling stunting career and a debut in the film, which is dominating the box office.
Hancock, who now lives in Windsor Locks, began training at the age of 3 at Tim Daggett’s Gold Medal Gymnastics. She graduated from North Carolina State University in 2008, where she had a successful Division 1 gymnastics career.
After college, Hancock said, she knew she wasn’t done.
“I knew I wanted to keep performing,” she said. “I loved performing.”
She traveled to Los Angeles and got a gig with a Sea World show run by UCLA gymnastics coach Valorie Kondos. From there, she heard about the Disney television show, “Make It or Break It,” a drama about teenaged gymnasts trying to make it to the Olympics.
